Growing Improved Nutrition

Prioritizing the issue of malnutrition and undernourishment

Two billion people worldwide suffer from malnutrition, nearly half of whom go to bed hungry every day. Poor nutrition causes nearly half of deaths in children under five - that’s 3.1 million children each year. Additionally, one in four of the world’s children suffer stunted growth which means their bodies fail to fully develop, with malnutrition one of the causes. And adults who were malnourished as children earn at least 20% less on average than those who weren’t. The right nutrition in the critical first 1,000 days of life provides the foundation for children to thrive and nations to prosper.

Nutrition central to the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development

Good nutrition is central to the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs). It is a vital precondition to achieving many of them, and SDG 2 specifically aims to end all of forms malnutrition by 2030. DSM is fully committed to contributing to SDG 2 ‘Zero Hunger’ and SDG 3, ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’, two of the five SDGs DSM believes our company and businesses can be most influential.

Identified as a topic in DSM’s materiality matrix, DSM has prioritized the issue of malnutrition for over a decade and is an active advocate at global platforms on increased action for improved nutrition.

DSM’s approach to address malnutrition

DSM has unique competencies and decades of experience in the manufacture of vitamins and other nutritional ingredients, the fortification of foods and beverages, and the development of dietary supplements. We leverage our science and technology base, as well as the expertise and commitment of our people, to deliver practical and scalable interventions in the global fight against malnutrition, positively impacting global nutrition, health, and development.
