Fighting hidden hunger

We’re putting all our nutritional science expertise to good use by helping the world’s malnourished lead fuller lives. It’s a big job: more than 800 million people today are still chronically undernourished, while some two billion suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. However, our essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are now fortifying the diets of some 100 million people every year.

If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of global greenhouse gas emissions worldwide behind the United States and China. And the financial cost is almost as serious as the environmental one – amounting to an astounding $1 trillion each year.

One answer is to tackle food spoilage - a deterioration in colour, texture, smell or taste – which is what we are doing at DSM with antioxidants like vitamins C and E that enable a more natural and scientifically proven solution by slowing down the oxidation processes, extending the ‘shelf life’ and reducing food to spoil. Foods that last longer after opening are great for consumers’ pockets, but also good for their health thanks to the intrinsic health benefits of our vitamins.


Africa Improved Foods

Improving food in Africa

One great way to improve food for people in Africa is to work with Africa Improved Foods (AIF). So, we invested in a factory in Kigali, Rwanda, that produces fortified foods for 1.5 million malnourished children and young women…every day. Soon we expect that number to hit two million people – which will reduce growth stunting in Rwandan children by 6% (from 38% to 32% by 2020) – giving tens of thousands of youngsters increased hope of fulfilling their potential in life.

But that’s only part of the story. Some 300 staff work at the factory, producing porridge flours with added milk powder, vitamins, and minerals; and all this is based on the produce of some 9,000 local farmers. Truly, healthier (and brighter) lives for all.


Pack-Age®: Increasing sustainability in cheese production

Cheese ripener solution that prevents food loss

How do you produce a delicious, nutritious product that lasts? Our Pack-Age® cheese ripening product offers an ingenious way of protecting the product against the growth of too much mold during natural ripening, thus delivering a fantastic, fresh cheese to the consumer. The science behind Pack-Age is based on a moisture-permeable, breathable membrane that eliminates the need for an inedible crust, which avoids up to 10% of the cheese being lost. What’s more the increased packaging efficiency lowers the carbon footprint of cheese production by 10%. Good for people, planet and profit.

If all the world’s naturally ripened Gouda & Parmesan cheeses were ripened with Pack-Age, we’d save 3.6 billion liters of milk; 200,000 tons less cheese would be wasted; and there would be €200 million more profit to share throughout the value chain.


Taste modulator for healthy and great tasting food and beverages: ModuMax™

Building indulgent but healthy flavor

People are increasingly on the search for healthier food… but taste remains the decisive factor. DSM helps with creating an enjoyable taste experience with ModuMax™ taste modulator from DSM, that manufacturers can add to their foods that are low on sugar, salt or saturated fat, or have additional fibers or plant proteins, whilst keeping a delicious taste, flavour and mouthfeel but without the indulgence.

The result is that people everywhere can enjoy great tasting healthy foods and beverages – in everything from savory foods and dairy to fast-growing segments like sports protein drinks, meal replacement shakes, and alternative plant-based milks. A true taste of where flavor innovation is heading.


Green Ocean algae-based technology

Algal oil for aquaculture

The positive health benefits of the Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA are well known, especially for cardiovascular health and cognitive development. Salmon is an excellent natural source, both for humans and salmon aquaculture – but it’s putting severe strain on wild fish numbers. Today some 17% of all wild-caught fish is used to produce fish oil and fishmeal. Which is why our bright scientists teamed up with Evonik to form the Veramaris® joint venture. It uses natural marine algae as its raw material for EPA and DHA instead of fish – with a huge impact on the health of the world’s oceans. To make the equivalent of 1kg of algae-based Veramaris would take 60kg of wild catch.


More sustainable farming

Minimizing methane emissions of cattle

As the world’s demand for protein like beef continues to grow, so too does the amount of methane emitted by the cows we raise. To tackle this challenge the team at DSM developed a solution that when added to dairy cattle feed reduces methane emissions by 30% - with no compromise on animal welfare, feed consumption or performance. When you consider that cows accounts for 4% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, that’s good news for us all.


CanolaPRO™: Plant-based protein

New plant proteins

CanolaPRO™ is an innovation that has turned previously inedible rapeseed/canola into a high nutritional-value protein source for everyone. Its potential was unlocked by a new technology developed by the bright minds at DSM, using the plant-based by-streams of rapeseed oil pressing.  It can be used in a variety of foods from dairy products to cereal.   


Animal feed enzyme technology: RONOZYME® ProAct

Animal feed that goes further

In animal feed, our unique enzyme technology like RONOZYME® ProAct improves the digestibility and usability of multiple ingredients - while reducing the use of finite rock phosphate and reducing nitrogen and phosphorus emissions. This also benefits the bottom line, as farmers get more value from less animal feed (because our enzyme helps animals digest a larger variety of corn it reduces pressure to grow speciality soy and corn crops).
