By 2050, there will be nine billion people living on our planet. And as the amount of arable land per capita decreases, so individual consumption will rise as people become wealthier. This means that availability of and access to good-quality nutrition will be critical.

In fact, our population isn’t just growing…it’s aging rapidly. Between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of people aged 60 years or older will double from about 11% to 22%. How will these people maintain their health and stay well? Today we’re working on the solutions to these questions…

Food for the future

Our science helps secure a sufficient quantity, quality and distribution of nutritional products and ingredients to feed future generations. For example, packaging made with our Akulon® polyamide can significantly extend the shelf life of packaged foods – a huge societal impact when you consider that one-third of all food products in the world are wasted. Another is life’sOMEGA™, a vegetarian, algae-based source of omega-3 that boosts the nutritional value of food without depleting actual food resources.

Longer, healthier lives

The other challenge we are determined to tackle is how to enable more people to live healthier lives as they grow older. One example is our Meso BioMatrix® Surgical Mesh that can repair and reinforce soft tissue in surgery. Another is our partnerships with contact lens manufacturers to bring better vision to countless people: The first generation of silicone hydrogel (SiHy) lenses was introduced with support from DSM to create a new generation of super-permeable contact lenses that improve performance, extend wearability and safeguard eye health.
